I wonder how many people held a teddy bear today. I wonder how many people made a cup of coffee, or listened to a Jeff Buckley song. I wonder how many couples broke up. How many children cried. I wonder how many people flushed a toilet, or smoked a cigarette. I wonder how many people walked, how many grew jealous, how many slept under cardboard. I imagine all of us, living under this throbbing atmospheric roof, too caught up in the silent torture of our mundane existences to care about anyone else. I wonder how many people died today, because no one wondered about them.
